About Greenbush
Greenbush sits on Madison's near west side, south of Regent Street along South Park Street, where St. Mary's Hospital (opened in 1912) and the Meriter hospital campus stand today. Its name comes from the old Greenbush, where Italian immigrants settled in the early 1900s; in 1912 a group of them started the Italian Workmen's Club, and in 1922 its members built their own brick clubhouse on Regent Street. Neighborhood House began here in 1916 as a settlement house with clubs and English and citizenship classes, and over the years it has welcomed Italian, Jewish, African American, Latino and Hmong families. When the old Triangle blocks east of Park Street were rebuilt around 1960, Neighborhood House moved one block west and opened a new building on South Mills Street in 1965. For play, families head to Edward Klief Park on Milton Street, a neighborhood playground since 1936 with a gaga pit, a basketball court and a sand volleyball court.
