About Dudgeon-Monroe
Dudgeon-Monroe is a Madison neighborhood along Monroe Street, reaching down to the shore of Lake Wingra. It takes its name from Dudgeon School, a brick school built on Monroe Street in 1927 and named for Richard Dudgeon, who led Madison's public schools for about thirty years; today the city owns the building and it holds community programs and a small school. In 1923 the Gay Building Company put up a row of shops on Monroe Street so families in its new homes could walk to the meat market, drugstore and grocer. Neighbors rent canoes and fish at Wingra Park, where ice was once cut from the lake, and children play in Glenwood Children's Park, an old sandstone quarry that landscape architect Jens Jensen turned into a wooded glen with 'council rings' for children's play.
