About Bay View

Bay View sits on the Lake Michigan shore south of downtown Milwaukee, and it was named for its views over the lake. In 1868 the Milwaukee Iron Company opened a rolling mill here to make railroad rails and built a company town around it, building homes for some workers and selling lots to others on easy terms. Bay View was its own village from 1879 until 1887, when its residents voted to join the city of Milwaukee. A row of the old iron workers' cottages still stands in the historic district by the lake, and today people walk the shore at South Shore Park, bring blankets to Humboldt Park for free Tuesday concerts on the hill, and visit the art galleries along Kinnickinnic Avenue.
