About St. Francis

Native people called this stretch of the Lake Michigan shore Nojoshing, and in 1845 Archbishop John Henni started Saint Francis de Sales Seminary here, the place the city is named for. The seminary's big Italianate main building, Henni Hall, was dedicated in 1856 on the lakeshore, and the Seminary Woods beside it hold a small cemetery and a grotto honoring Our Lady of Lourdes. For a hundred years the area was part of the Town of Lake, and in 1951 its people voted to become the city of St. Francis so they would not be taken into Milwaukee. Today it is a small lakefront city next to Milwaukee, where people walk the Nojoshing Trail by the water and visit the historical society's displays in the round lobby of the civic center.
