About Benson
Benson was platted in 1870 when the railroad reached this spot, and for a time it was the end of the line and a busy trading center for a hundred miles around. It was named for Ben H. Benson, a Norwegian settler. The town grew into the seat of Swift County, and its Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse has served since 1898. A library opened in 1911, and the first one-room schoolhouse still stands in Ambush Park, open to visitors.
