About Black River Falls
Black River Falls grew up on the falls of the Black River, where early settlers used the water power to run sawmills in the forest, and it became the seat of Jackson County in 1853. The town takes pride in starting the first free public library in Wisconsin, on November 25, 1872, and its 1914 Carnegie library on Main Street is now the county historical society's museum. After a flood in 1911 the downtown was rebuilt with brick shops that are now on the National Register, and the city is also home to the headquarters of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Today families walk or bike the 4-mile Foundation Trail around town, swim at the Lunda Community Center, look for Karner blue butterflies, and gather for the Karner Blue Butterfly Festival each July.
