About West Salem
Thomas Leonard came from New England in 1851 and built a log cabin, and in 1856 his village was laid out. A Baptist minister named it Salem, a word for peace, and West was added when mail got mixed up with another Salem near Milwaukee. Leonard gave land to the railroad for a depot, so his village grew while nearby Neshonoc faded, and some of its houses were moved here. Writer Hamlin Garland was born here in 1860 and later made a summer home in town, and after a big fire in 1911 the downtown was built again. Today families visit the Garland Homestead and the 1856 octagon house, follow the La Crosse River State Trail, and come out each June for June Dairy Days.
