About Chetek
Chetek takes its name from the Ojibwe word for pelicans, and the spelling was settled in 1872, the same year the first post office opened, the Omaha Railroad began service and a Knapp, Stout logging camp was set up. The little lumber town became a city in 1891. It sits on a chain of six lakes with more than 130 miles of shoreline, and the chamber says tourism has been a big part of life here for more than five generations. Families come for the lakes, fishing docks and beaches in summer, and the city hosts Liberty Fest on the Fourth of July, Harvest Fest in September and Winter Fest in February.
