About Rice Lake
Rice Lake takes its name from the wild rice that the Ojibwe people gathered on the lake, near mounds that much older peoples built along its shore. Around 1870 the Knapp, Stout & Co. lumber company dammed the Red Cedar River to hold its logs, laid out a village with a wide main street, and named many streets for its officers. The railroad came in 1882, the town became a city in 1887, and it grew into the shopping, school and hospital center for the farms and lake country around it. Today families swim and fish on the lake, walk the trails and Indian Mounds Park, and bring lawn chairs to free summer concerts at the Veterans Memorial Park band shell.
