About Cornell
Cornell sits where the Fisher River meets the Chippewa River, on ground where Jean Brunet opened a trading post and an inn for loggers in 1843. The town was named for Ezra Cornell, a founder of Western Union, who owned a great deal of timber land nearby. In 1912 a paper and wood products mill put up a giant steel pulpwood stacker by the river, and today it is the only one of its kind still standing, the centerpiece of Mill Yard Park and its visitors' center. Families come to camp and swim at Brunet Island State Park next to town, ride or walk the Old Abe State Trail from its trailhead downtown, and gather for the town fair in June and fireworks on July 3.
