About Cumberland
Cumberland is called the Island City because its oldest part sits on land almost ringed by Beaver Dam Lake, a place the Ojibwe named for the lake the beavers made. Settlers built the first log cabins in 1874 near a planned railroad line, the trains came through in 1878, and the town took the name Cumberland in 1880 for a railroad man from Cumberland, Maryland, becoming a city in 1885. Sawmills, saloons, hotels and an opera house soon followed, and in 1906 the town opened a brick Carnegie library with Ionic columns that is still the town's busy library today. Since 1932 Cumberland has thrown the Rutabaga Festival in late summer, with music, rides, food and a parade, and in winter people head out on the lake for a big ice fishing contest.
