About Cologne

Cologne began as two villages on either side of Benton Lake, Benton to the north and Cologne to the south, both settled in the mid-1850s and both incorporated in 1881. The town was named by its founders, Adam and Paul Mohrbacher, for the German city they came from, and the two villages joined as Cologne in 1891. A railroad came through in 1872 and a grist mill opened in 1880, and freight trains still roll through town today. In 1939 two residents filmed everyday life here, and their short movie is now in the National Film Registry. Today about 2,000 people live here, and the town gathers for its Glad Days festival and, each summer, a Tuesday market near City Hall.
