About Waconia
Waconia sits on the south shore of Lake Waconia, a name from a Dakota word for the lake that is often said to mean spring or fountain. A Minneapolis surveyor platted the town in March 1857, and German settlers arrived in large groups that same year, followed by Bohemians, Swedes and Swiss. After 1884 the island in the lake became a resort called Coney Island of the West, and the town became a summer favorite. Today it is a growing lake town with a historical society, a golf course and a long list of fall events.
