About DeForest
DeForest is named for Isaac DeForest, who came in 1854 to farm wheat and laid out the village in 1856. He moved away after wheat prices fell, but the name stayed, and the Chicago and North Western Railway helped the farm town ship grain and dairy. It became a village in 1897 and has grown quickly since World War II as a neighbor of Madison along the Yahara River. Families know it for its library built like a Norwegian stave church with dragons on the roof, the restored railroad depot, and a big Fourth of July celebration at Fireman's Park.
