About Windsor

Windsor's first settler was William Lawrence, who came from Vermont in 1841, and two years later the Scottish immigrant James Morrison settled by the headwaters of the Yahara River at what became Morrisonville. When the Madison-to-Portage railroad opened in 1871, Morrisonville got a wooden depot and a post office, and goods like tobacco passed through its little hotel-and-stable town. For most of its history Windsor was a rural farm town north of Madison, and in 2015 it voted to become a village that takes in Lake Windsor, Morrisonville and part of Token Creek. Today new neighborhoods sit beside working farms, Morrisonville still calls itself Frogtown U.S.A. on its welcome signs, and Token Creek County Park is close by.
