About Monona
Monona sits on the southeastern shore of Lake Monona, where people of the Woodland cultures built earthen mounds long ago; the Outlet Mound, perhaps 2,000 years old, was saved in 1944 and given to the city. For a long time the area was farmland and summer homes, part of the Town of Blooming Grove, until neighbors made it a village in 1938. It grew fast in the 1950s, built a community center and pool in 1963 and a library in 1967, and became a city in 1969. Today families walk to the lake piers at Stone Bridge Park, watch the sunset over Lake Monona, and walk the leafy lakeside streets of Frost Woods.
