About Sun Prairie

In June 1837, a party of men on their way to build the territorial capital at Madison came out of days of rain onto a sunny prairie and carved the words "Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird came back two years later as the first settler, and the crossroads called Bird's Corners grew into a busy grain market when the railroad stopped here in 1859. A spark plug factory in 1919 and other plants brought new jobs to the farm town, and it became a city in 1958. Today families crowd Angell Park for the Sweet Corn Festival each August, and every February 2 the town watches Jimmy the Groundhog.
