This week in Waunakee
Nothing on Waunakee’s calendar for the next two weeks yet.
About Waunakee
Waunakee grew up around the railroad: in 1871 local landowners gave the Chicago and North Western two miles of right of way and $1,500 to stop trains on their land instead of at a mill two miles away, and a village was platted that January. Its name is said to mean "fair and pleasant valley," and it still calls itself "The Only Waunakee in the World." The little wooden depot from 1896 once saw sixty trains a day carrying farm goods like cream, tobacco and grain, and today it is the chamber's welcome center in Reeve Park, with a model railroad downstairs. Families now come downtown for the Farmers and Makers Market, Wauktoberfest in September and the Light the Night holiday parade in December.
