About Deerfield
Deerfield is known as the village that moved. Norwegian and Irish settlers, and later Germans, first gathered on the old stage road between Milwaukee and Madison, but when the railroad was laid two miles south in 1882, the town packed up and followed it to 'Deerfield Station.' By the late 1890s some 600 people had a bank, an opera hall, a half-mile horse-racing track and a busy main street, rebuilt in brick after fires. Today the trains are gone and families bike and walk the Glacial Drumlin Trail through the rolling drumlin hills, with the library, the parks and chamber events like the Great Pumpkin Hunt and the Ice Cream Social bringing neighbors together.
