About Lake Mills
Lake Mills sits on the east shore of Rock Lake, where Captain Joseph Keyes built a sawmill and a gristmill run by the lake's water and named the place for them. The village was chartered in 1836, and for one year, 1866, it even went by the name Tyranena, said to mean sparkling waters. Its stone L. D. Fargo Public Library, with steep gables and a little steeple, opened in 1902 and is still the town library. Families gather in Commons Park downtown for the Wednesday farmers market, the Fall Festival of Color and the Town & Country Days parade down Main Street, and the high school teams are the L-Cats.
