About Marshall
Marshall began in June 1837, when Andrew Bird, Zenas Bird and Aaron Petrie settled on the banks of the Maunesha River; after a fire burned the settlement in 1838, people called the spot Bird's Ruins for years. It was later named Hanchettville and then Howard City when the railroad from Milwaukee to Madison put a depot here, and in 1861 it took the name of Samuel Marshall, a Madison banker who bought the land and the grist mill. That mill, built in 1852, still runs today as the Blaschka Milling Co., and its dam made the mill pond at the center of town. Families now fish, paddle and picnic on the pond at Riley-Deppe County Park and Firemen's Park, where the Lions Club holds its Ice Fisheree each winter.
