About East Troy
Settlers from New York, along with newcomers from Germany, Ireland and Scotland, started East Troy in 1836 and named it after Troy, New York. The two village founders, Austin McCracken and Jacob Burgit, gave land for a village square, and Main Street still circles it. In 1907 an electric interurban line arrived from Milwaukee, and part of it still runs today as the East Troy Electric Railroad, a volunteer museum whose trolleys leave from a 1910 power substation. Families ride the trolleys to the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, picnic in the square, and bring lawn chairs to the East Troy Bluegrass Festival, held on the square every September since 1994.
