About Vernon
Vernon began as part of Muskego until the state made it a town of its own in 1839, and it stayed a town with small crossroads communities such as Guthrie and Dodges Corners until it became a village in 2020. Scottish settlers formed a Covenanter congregation here in 1848 and put up a plain Greek Revival meeting house in the 1850s, now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Fox River winds through the Vernon Wildlife Area, more than 4,000 acres of marsh, grassland and oak woods where the state first leased land for public hunting in 1946. Today people walk its new loop trail and boardwalks, paddle the river on the Fabulous Fox Water Trail, and look for spring wildflowers in Martin's Woods beside the river.
