About Burlington
Burlington began in December 1835, when Moses Smith and William Whiting carved their names on trees near where the Fox and White rivers meet, and settlers from New England soon followed. The little settlement was called Foxville until 1839, when it took the name of Burlington, Vermont. Water power ran its first sawmill and grist mill, which ground the first flour shipped from Wisconsin to New York, and a woolen mill that made the first roll of cloth in the state. Today Burlington is nicknamed Chocolate City, and Nestlé makes chocolate morsels here. Families shop downtown during Maxwell Street Days, see a play by the Haylofters at the Malt House Theater on the Fox River, and visit the pioneer log cabin in Wehmhoff Square.
