About Mukwonago
Mukwonago grew where a Potawatomi village of the Bear Clan once stood, and its name comes from a Potawatomi word for a bear's den. Settlers came in 1836, and by 1847 the little town had a flour mill and a sawmill. It was a farm town, and later a resort stop with big hotels for city visitors who came for the spring waters; it became a village in 1905. Today the village wraps around Upper and Lower Phantom Lake on the Mukwonago River, families hike, camp and swim at Mukwonago Park, and the Red Brick Museum shows an 1842 settler's house full of pioneer things.
