About Wabasha
Wabasha sits on the Mississippi River at the foot of Lake Pepin, near where the Zumbro River joins it, and calls itself one of the oldest towns on the upper Mississippi. It is named for a line of Dakota chiefs called Wapasha, meaning red leaf, whose band camped in this valley; fur traders set up posts here in the 1830s and the town was laid out in 1854. Steamboats, lumber and later clamming for pearl-button shells kept the riverfront busy, and its two-story brick Main Street from that era is now a historic district. Today people come to watch bald eagles that gather on the open river in winter at the National Eagle Center, and fill the streets for Riverboat Days in summer and the Grumpy Old Men Festival in February.
