About Elm Grove

Elm Grove grew up along the Watertown Plank Road, a toll road of wooden planks built from Milwaukee to Watertown between 1848 and 1853. In 1855 Charles Reusch built the Elm Grove Hotel beside it, with a harness shop, grocery, post office and saloon all under one roof, and the next year the School Sisters of Notre Dame bought 40 acres nearby for a convent, orphanage and small school that opened in 1859. The sisters laid out the first streets in 1869, and their cream brick convent buildings with stepped German gables still stand over the main street. The village was formed out of the Town of Brookfield in 1955, and in 1960 a church theater group opened the Sunset Playhouse, the first theater in Wisconsin built entirely by a community theater group. Today families line the streets for the Memorial Day Parade, run since the late 1940s, and fill the Playhouse for children's shows.
