About Menomonee Falls
Menomonee Falls began in 1836 beside a set of rapids on the Menomonee River, on land where Menominee and Chippewa people had lived. Settlers dammed the river to run sawmills and wheat mills, quarried the limestone underfoot and burned it into lime in tall kilns that still stand by the river. The little mill town at the 'Four Corners' of Main Street and Appleton Avenue became a village in 1892 and grew fast after the 1950s, and today it is the most populous village in Wisconsin. Its old downtown still has cream brick shops, an 1891 limestone roller mill beside the river, and a 1929 village hall with an eight-sided bell tower.
