About Empire
Empire began as Empire Township in 1858 and was named for New York, the Empire State. It stayed a township for 165 years while the farmland around it filled with new homes. Voters made it a city on February 28, 2023, partly so nearby cities could not annex its new neighborhoods. Today about 3,177 people live there, and many spend free time at Whitetail Woods Regional Park, a 456-acre county park by Empire Lake.
