About Fontana-on-Geneva Lake
Fontana sits on the west shore of Geneva Lake, where three bands of Potawatomi once lived until they were moved to Kansas in 1836, the same fall James Van Slyke and his wife built the first settlers' log cabin. From the 1870s, rich families from Chicago built big summer estates on the lake, and in 1924 Fontana split from Walworth Township to become its own village, which threw a year-long party for its 100th birthday in 2024. Today people come for the large sandy beach with lifeguards, the boat launch and the lakeside parks, and for small shops and hometown places to eat. Summer brings movies on the beach, Fourth of July fireworks shot from a barge, and the Lions Club's Lobster Boil and Steak Fry in Reid Park.
