About Williams Bay
Williams Bay is named for Captain Israel Williams of Massachusetts, who settled here with several of his sons in 1837 on the shore of Geneva Lake. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, well-off Chicago families began coming here for summer, and the village is still a lake getaway with beaches, a boat launch and about 4 miles of the public Geneva Lake Shore Path. It is home to Yerkes Observatory, opened in 1897 with the world's largest lens telescope, where people now take tours and walk the grounds by candlelight each fall. Families also explore the 231-acre Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy, wave to the mail boat whose jumpers leap onto piers to deliver letters in summer, and cheer on the Williams Bay Bulldogs.
