About Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva grew up at the northeast bay of Geneva Lake, on land the Potawatomi knew under their leader Big Foot; a surveyor named it after Geneva, New York, and it became a village in 1844. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, wealthy Chicago families built grand summer homes on the shore, which earned the lake the nickname 'Newport of the West.' The city built the Riviera on the beach in 1932, with a ballroom upstairs where big bands once played, and the first Gen Con game convention met at Horticultural Hall in 1968. Today families walk the public Shore Path past the old mansions, swim at Riviera Beach, and come back in February to watch artists carve giant snow sculptures at Winterfest.
