About Delavan
Delavan began in 1836, when brothers Samuel and Henry Phoenix came from New York to start a town where no alcohol would be sold, and they named it for the temperance leader E.C. Delavan. In 1847 the Mabie brothers brought the U.S. Olympic Circus here for the winter, and for almost 50 years more than two dozen circuses wintered in Delavan; the P.T. Barnum Circus was started here in 1871. Downtown still has a brick main street from 1913, a water tower park with circus animal figures, and 19 Walldogs murals painted in 2015 that show the town's past. Today families come for Delavan Lake, free summer concerts at the Phoenix Park Bandshell, and the Thursday market at Tower Park.
