About Germantown

Germantown was Potawatomi land until an 1833 treaty, and in the 1840s German families from Bavaria, Hesse, Prussia and other regions came to farm it, which gave the place its name. In 1842 the Dhein family started the crossroads hamlet of Dheinsville, where settlers from the Hunsrück hills built half-timber houses and, in 1862, a limestone church. Farms, dairies and limestone quarries kept the town going, and a rail stop helped South Germantown grow into a village in 1927. Today families come to Dheinsville's history park for its museums and the yearly Oktoberfest, and turn out for the Fourth of July parade and a November Christmas parade that ends at Firemen's Park.
