About Pewaukee
Pewaukee began as a farm township, set up by the territorial legislature in 1840, and it lost the race to be Waukesha County's seat by just two votes. Railroads came through in 1855 and 1885, and their tracks still cross at a diamond in the Duplainville neighborhood, a spot rail fans love to watch. A settler named George Peffer grafted fruit trees here and raised the Pewaukee apple, first recorded in 1870, and a memorial orchard in Simmons Woods Park remembers him. The township became the City of Pewaukee in 1999, wrapped around the separate Village of Pewaukee, and today it is home to Waukesha County Technical College, the Hindu Temple of Wisconsin and part of the shore of Pewaukee Lake, the biggest lake in Lake Country.
