About Mequon

Mequon's name may come from an Ojibwe word for a ladle, after the curve of the Milwaukee River, or from a Menominee word for feather, and the Menominee, Potawatomi and Sauk lived here first. Settlers from New York, England and Ireland arrived in the 1830s, and in 1839 twenty German Lutheran families settled Freistadt, where they built the first Lutheran church in Wisconsin. For a hundred years this was farm country, with fieldstone farmhouses and eight-sided barns built to stand up to the winds off Lake Michigan. Mequon became a city in 1957 and still keeps about half its land open, with more than two dozen parks, the 444-acre Mequon Nature Preserve and the Ozaukee Interurban Trail running north and south through town.
