About Grand Meadow
Grand Meadow was platted in 1870 on a low ridge in eastern Mower County and named for the wide prairies around the first town site. It grew as a farm town on the Milwaukee Road railroad, which served it until the late 1970s. Main Street keeps two rare buildings on the National Register: the 1891 Grand Army of the Republic hall, one of only two left in Minnesota, and the 1910 Exchange State Bank, a Prairie School design by Purcell and Elmslie. Today about 1,100 people live here, and the town is known for its school, a K-12 campus of five concrete domes, and for the nearby chert quarry where Native people dug stone for tools centuries ago.
