About Horicon
Horicon sits at the south tip of Horicon Marsh, where seven Native American foot trails once met. Settlers built a dam here in 1846 to run the town's first sawmill, and the water rose so high that people called the marsh Lake Horicon, until a court had the dam torn down in 1869. Later the town became a factory town: wagon maker Daniel Van Brunt and his brother built an early grain seeder, and the John Deere Horicon Works still makes lawn tractors and mowers here. Today families come for the marsh, with its boardwalk, trails and visitor center, and every spring and fall they watch huge flocks of geese, ducks and sandhill cranes pass through.
