About Hartford

Hartford grew up beside the rapids of the Rubicon River, where settlers built a dam and a sawmill in 1844 and named the town after Hartford, Connecticut, a few years later. The railroad came through in 1855, and the farm-market town became a city in 1883. From 1906 the Kissel family built fine cars, trucks and fire engines here, including the Gold Bug speedster, and the Wisconsin Automotive Museum now shows the biggest group of Hartford-made Kissels anywhere. Today families walk the downtown farmers market on Saturdays, catch a show or a class at the Schauer Arts Center, and line Main Street for the Christmas parade each November.
