About Waupun
Seymour Wilcox founded Waupun in 1839 beside the Rock River, and his family arrived that March after a cabin was built among the bur oaks. The name comes from an Ojibwe word for the dawn, and a spelling slip by the state turned Waubun into Waupun. Local inventor and sculptor Clarence Shaler filled the town with outdoor statues, which is why Waupun calls itself the City of Sculpture; a bronze End of the Trail has stood in Shaler Park since 1929. Today families stroll the downtown blocks on Main Street, visit the Heritage Museum in the old Carnegie library, and head out to the nearby Horicon Marsh to watch birds.
