About Beaver Dam
Beaver Dam began in 1841, when Thomas Mackie and Joseph Goetschius settled beside an old beaver dam on a stream that runs into the Beaver Dam River, and it became a city in 1856, the same year the railroad arrived. In 1891 the town opened the Williams Free Library, a rugged stone building with towers that now holds the Dodge County Historical Society's museum. Visitors once came from across the country to a resort built around the Vita Spring, which the city bought and turned into Swan Park. Today families go to the Beaver Dam Lake shore, the summer Craft Fair in Swan Park and the Halloween casket races downtown.
