About Hugo
Hugo began in the 1870s as Centerville Station, a stop where trains on the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad refueled. French and French Canadian families farmed the land around Oneka Lake, and Louis and Francoise Kuchli opened the first store and hotel in 1872. The village took the name Hugo when it incorporated in 1906, and Oneka Township joined the city in 1972. It still has horse farms, but it has grown quickly into a commuter town north of White Bear Lake along Highway 61.
