About Jefferson
Jefferson sits where the Crawfish River flows into the Rock River, and its first settlers came from Milwaukee in December 1836 to use the river's water power. In 1839 it was as far up the Rock as a steamboat could go. Many later settlers were German, and since 1971 the town has celebrated that heritage at Gemuetlichkeit Days, now held each September at the Jefferson County Fair Park with polka music, German food, a parade and a hunt for a hidden doll called Mecki. Today Jefferson is the county seat, with a historic Main Street of old brick shops, a 1911 Carnegie library building and a holiday parade of lights each December.
