About Whitewater
Whitewater grew where Whitewater Creek meets Spring Brook, and it is named for the white sand in their beds. Long before that, people of the effigy mound culture built animal-shaped mounds on the west side, which you can still walk among in the Effigy Mounds Preserve. In 1840 settlers from New England, including Prosper Cravath and Dr. James Trippe, laid out the village, and a mill dam on the creek made the pond now called Cravath Lake. The first railroad in Wisconsin came through in 1853, and a teachers' school opened in 1868 that grew into UW-Whitewater. Today the town calls itself "Second Salem" for its ghost stories and holds Spirit Tours each October, and families enjoy Cravath Lakefront Park, Freeze Fest in January and Maxwell Street Day in July.
