About Delafield
Delafield sits on the Bark River in Waukesha County's lake country and was established in 1837, named for Dr. Charles Delafield of Milwaukee. In 1846 Nelson Hawks opened an inn here for stagecoach travelers on the plank road between Milwaukee and Madison, and that clapboard inn still stands as a museum after neighbors moved it in 1960 to save it. Up the hill, the wooden Little Red Church on the Hill, St. John Chrysostom, has held services since the 1850s, and the old stone fish hatchery that once raised millions of walleye is now a city park. Families walk the Ice Age Trail through Cushing Memorial Park, named for the town's three Cushing brothers, and borrow everything from books to outdoor gear at a library that began as one shelf in the post office in 1904.
