About Fort Atkinson

Fort Atkinson grew up on the Rock River where Fort Koshkonong stood during the Black Hawk War of 1832, and it is named for General Henry Atkinson. Dwight and Almira Foster came in 1836 as the first lasting settlers, and their 1841 frame house still stands. In 1885 William Dempster Hoard started Hoard's Dairyman here, and the town became known for dairy, which the Hoard Historical Museum and National Dairy Shrine now share with visitors. Families today walk a Main Street of cream-brick storefronts, cross the river bridge, and visit the Panther Intaglio, the last dug-out effigy mound left in Wisconsin.
