About Oconomowoc
Oconomowoc takes its name from a Potawatomi word that the chamber translates as 'where the waters meet,' and it sits among Fowler Lake, Lac La Belle and other Lake Country lakes. A fur trader set up a post here in 1827, and in 1837 Charles Sheldon staked a claim on the shore of Fowler Lake; the plank road came in 1850 and the first train from Milwaukee in 1854. Rich families from Chicago and Milwaukee built summer homes on the lakes, and Oconomowoc became a city in 1865. Today people stroll the downtown boardwalk on Fowler Lake, swim at City Beach on Lac La Belle, shop the Saturday farmers market, and gather on the Village Green for Fall Fest.
