About Kiel
Kiel began in 1852, when Charley Lindemann settled beside the Sheboygan River among Menominee and Potawatomi neighbors, and his wife named the place after her hometown of Kiel, Germany. Two years later Henry Belitz, remembered as the Father of Kiel, built a hotel and a mill on the river, and in 1883 William Meyer built the town's only water-powered flour mill, which still stands on Fremont Street. Kiel grew into a factory town making brick, furniture and wooden shoes, and was once called the Wooden Shoes Capital of Wisconsin. Today families come out for German Days in June, the four-day Kiel Picnic in City Park each August, and an ice sculpting contest on Fremont Street in February.
