About Plymouth
The first land along the Mullet River was sold in 1836, and settlers from England, Pennsylvania and Connecticut followed, naming the place after Plymouth, Massachusetts. It became a city in 1877 and earned the nickname 'Hub City', both for sitting in the middle of Sheboygan County and for the wagon hubs and spokes once made here. Plymouth's cheese exchange once set cheese prices every Monday, so the town calls itself the 'Cheese Capital of the World', and a 20-foot fiberglass cow named Antoinette stands where the exchange used to be. Today families stroll the downtown past more than 25 murals, walk the Riverwalk behind Stayer Park, and come out for the Cheese Capital Festival, the Mill Street Festival and the Christmas parade.
