About New Holstein
New Holstein began in 1848, when about 70 people from the Hamburg area of Germany settled here, and the town is named for Holstein, the German duchy many of them came from. At first the settlement was called Altona, but when the railroad came in 1872 the station took the name New Holstein, and the mail soon followed. Herman C. Timm, a settler who came at 14, built a feed mill and a bank, and his 1873 house on Main Street, with its tower and stick-style trim, was restored by the local historical society and reopened in 2007. Today the city of about 3,200 people has a public pool, a library, parks with a disc golf course and a ski trail, and its own airport, where Super Cub pilots gather during the big air show week in nearby Oshkosh.
